The Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the International Centre for Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) has been officially granted the status of Observer by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Office of International Standards and Legal Affairs at UNESCO confirmed in a formal letter to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of OIC-COMSTECH, that it had received the letter from COMSTECH and that OIC-COMSTECH's observer status at SESAME became effective on September 26, 2025.

Professor Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary offered his thoughts on this development, saying, "We are honored to join SESAME as an observer."

COMSTECH's ongoing dedication to promoting advanced research and enhancing scientific collaboration among OIC Member States is reflected in this milestone.

SESAME is an innovative paradigm of partnership that uses science, technology, and innovation to break down geopolitical barriers. The partnership between COMSTECH and SESAME will provide scientists from the Islamic world with new opportunities for collaborative research, capacity building, and access to state-of-the-art facilities.

He also underlined that COMSTECH, the OIC on Science and Technology's Ministerial Standing Committee, is committed to fostering global collaborations that further knowledge, innovation, and sustainable development in accordance with the objectives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
