The Punjab Department of School Education has declared its intention to switch to solar power in all of the province's secondary and higher education institutions.

Authorities have asked for updated information on schools that have already made the transition to solar energy. Only four of the 861 higher and secondary institutions in Punjab—including 21 in Lahore—have already made the switch to solar power.

School administrators have been formally instructed by the education department to provide comprehensive information about the schools that are slated to undergo solar conversion by June 30, 2025.

According to sources, some organizations have chosen to use solar energy on their own without assistance from the government. Principals of schools who do not submit the necessary data may be disciplined, the letter also warned.

Schools have been using solar energy for the past five years, according to Rana Liaquat Ali, general secretary of the Punjab Teachers Union (PTU). However, some schools have had to independently install solar systems due to insufficient funding.

He added that occasionally, instructors were asked to pay Rs 15,000 to school authorities so they could buy solar panels.

With a focus on the need for fair support in implementing renewable energy solutions, Rana Liaquat Ali urged the administration to make sure that solar panels are provided free of charge to all schools in the province.
