PTA has introduced free Wi-Fi at universities accredited by the HEC and will provide computers and smartphones to facilitate digital access, as Pakistan's telecom subscriber count surpasses 200 million.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a six-month free Wi-Fi hotspot project in partnership with major telecom providers PTCL, Transworld, Nayatel, Cybernet, and Wateen. A number of women's universities and other universities recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) will offer the service.

The distribution of 200 domestically built cellphones to female SIM card holders is another step to promote female digital access. Mobile manufacturers will donate the smartphones, which will be distributed to residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) of Pakistan via an electronic voting process.

The statement is made as Pakistan's telecom customer base surpasses 200 million, marking a significant milestone. 15 million FTTH (Fiber to the Home) connections and over 125 million broadband subscribers are included in this.

A more comprehensive Digital Outreach Program has also been initiated in collaboration with the Ministry of IT, PTCL, and Ufone. The initiative involves providing free computers and internet access to a few Balochistani universities as well as recently combined areas.

PTA reaffirmed its dedication to closing the digital divide and empowering the country by ensuring that everyone has access to technology and better connectivity.
