Officially, a new grading system for the Matriculation (SSC) and Intermediate (HSC) exams across Pakistan will not be implemented for a year.
With effect from the 2026 examination session, the revised policy will not be applicable to the 2025 Annual Examinations.
A formal notification attesting to this delay has been made public.
Following the announcement of the new system by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), the Sindh government released a notification on October 15, 2024, detailing the same policy for the 2025 exams.
The strategy will now be put into effect beginning with the Annual Exams of 2026, according to a more recent announcement by the Sindh Universities and Boards Department, which cited the October 2024 and June 18, 2025 orders.
Key Details of the New Grading Policy
Under the new scheme:
- A++ (Exceptional): 95% to 100% marks, GPA 5.0
- A+ (Outstanding): 90% to 94%
- A (Excellent): 85% to 89%
- B++ (Very Good): 80% to 84%
- B+ (Good): 75% to 79%
- B (Fairly Good): 70% to 74%
- C (Above Average): 60% to 69%
- D (Average): 50% to 59%
- E (Below Average): 40% to 49%
Students who receive a score of less than 40% will be deemed to have failed to meet the minimum criteria. But rather than being called a "fail," such a performance will be called "unsatisfactory."
Furthermore, the updated grading scheme will be applied starting in grades nine and eleven. Grade Points (GP) will be used to report results, and Grade Point Averages (GPA) will follow.
Through alignment with international assessment standards and an emphasis on a more thorough and performance-oriented evaluation rather than merely pass/fail classifications, this new system seeks to modernize Pakistan's examination structure.
IBCC had previously announced the new unified grading policy for exams and assessments in Pakistan. The move was seen as one of the biggest leaps in the education history of Pakistan.
