Heavy rains and flooding caused schools all around Pakistan to open later than planned this year. Now, that delay has led to yet another setback: more than a million student's first-term exams have been postponed.
The School Education Department in Punjab Pakistan has announced that over a million students who are registered in 38,000 government schools will not be taking their first-term exams this year.
According to officials, the department was forced to combine the first-term tests with the impending midterm exams since the recent rains and the delayed reopening of schools had seriously affected the exam timetable.
In addition to the midterm assessments, the first-term tests that were initially slated to begin on August 15 have been rescheduled until the first week of December.
Concerned about the delay, parents pointed out that students perform better and feel less pressured when tests are administered on time and according to the curriculum. But according to them, pupils have become disappointed and demotivated as a result of the protracted uncertainty.
After the floods presented difficulties, the decision was made to expedite the test procedure and prevent disruptions to the academic program.
