Japanese company Shimadzu Corporation has developed the Ether Clock OC 020, a strontium optical lattice clock that is being touted as the world's most accurate clock.
According to foreign media reports, its price has been set at more than $3 million.
This clock doesn't look like a regular clock but rather like a small refrigerator. Its rectangular case is three feet high and has a volume of 250 liters.
Although its design may not seem impressive, this clock is so accurate that it will only make a difference of one second in 10 billion years.
The Ether Clock OC 020 is 100 times more accurate than cesium atomic clocks, which are used as the standard for defining the current second.
Although optical lattice watches have existed before, this is the first time a model has become commercially available.
This clock is capable of measuring the Earth's fluctuations due to the movement of Earth's plates and volcanic activity with a difference of a few centimeters.
Experts believe that in the future, this clock could become an integral part of the social fabric.
