Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences

Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (SIOVS), located in Hyderabad, Sindh, is Pakistan's premier ophthalmic center, established on 9 March 2013 under a Sindh Assembly Act by upgrading the former Liaquat University Eye Hospital (founded 1963). It stands unique as the only institution in the country created through legislation, combining patient care, teaching, training, and research in ophthalmology.

With an outpatient building that serves over 1,000 daily patients and a 90‑bed inpatient capacity spread across three wards (male, female, and pediatric), plus a modern operation theatre complex hosting four specialized surgical suites, SIOVS delivers comprehensive eye care including cataract, glaucoma, pediatric, oculoplastic, and vitreoretinal treatments at no cost to the public .

The institute is also a postgraduate training hub, offering BS degrees, FCPS/MCPS fellowships, and subspecialty diagnostic programs. It maintains strong national and international partnerships most notably with the Higher Education Commission and Fred Hollows Foundation to advance research and low-vision aid clinics. A landmark 2023 study at SIOVS used deep learning on retinal fundus images to detect diabetic retinopathy with over 93% accuracy, showcasing its cutting-edge diagnostic research.

SIOVS's mission emphasizes high-quality care, blindness prevention, skilled human resource development, and collaborative research, positioning it as a pivotal force in Sindh's and Pakistan's vision-health landscape.
