"Labzganj," the first comprehensive online dictionary for the Balochi language, has been released and is currently available to the general audience.
The Balochi Academy Quetta says its new digital dictionary, launched under the NLP initiative, marks a historic step in Balochi lexicography and provides a modern tool for language documentation and learning.
With over 40,000 words, it is the most comprehensive lexicon library ever created for the Balochi language.
For students, researchers, linguists, translators, and language learners in Pakistan and throughout the Baloch diaspora worldwide, each entry greatly increases its worth by offering definitions and equivalents in four languages: Balochi, English, Urdu, and Brahvi.
During the launch event, Habitan Umar, the coordinator of the NLP Balochi Project and chairman of the Balochi Academy, emphasized the initiative's academic underpinnings.
Participations
He mentioned that the academy had previously released "Balochi Labzbalad," which Jan Muhammad Dashti had edited and collated in 2015 and 2017.
He further thanked Panah Baloch for compiling and editing "Labzganj" in Balochi, Urdu, Brahvi, and Sindhi, and Dr. Naseer Dashti for working on the Balochi–English and English–Balochi dictionaries.
"The development and standardization of Balochi lexicography, which culminated in the launch of this comprehensive online digital dictionary, were made possible by these scholarly efforts," he stated.
The program has received widespread support from linguists and academics, who describe it as an essential instrument for preserving a language that has traditionally relied on oral transmission and dispersed written sources.
