Sindh proposes 15% budget hike for 32 public universities

Sindh Government has increased the budget allocation for public universities in Sindh by 15% increasing the total amount from Rs34 billion to Rs40 billion for the fiscal year 2025–2026.

Officials say that Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah authorized the Higher Education Commission Sindh's report of the increase before the provincial budget was unveiled on June 13. The annual budget now includes the increased grant.

A group led by Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, the former vice chancellor of NED University, recommended raising the grant. This clearance would result in a 15% increase in funding allotted to Sindh's 32 public universities.

The University of Sindh in Jamshoro will receive Rs3.410 billion, while the University of Karachi will now receive Rs3.554 billion. Another Rs2.149 billion would go to Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, while NED University of Engineering and Technology will receive Rs2.578 billion.

The budget allocation for Jinnah Sindh Medical University and Dow University of Health Sciences has been increased to Rs1.176 billion and Rs1.294 billion, respectively. To Rs1.595 billion, the grant for Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences has been expanded.

Among business schools, IBA Karachi has been given Rs692 million, while Sukkur IBA University will get Rs1.916 billion. Tandojam's Sindh Agriculture University has been given a budget of Rs2.259 billion.

Dawood University of Engineering and Technology has been given Rs1.812 billion, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur has been given Rs1.645 billion, and Government College University Hyderabad has been given Rs498 million.

In addition, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University in Lyari would receive Rs376 million, Karachi Metropolitan University Rs284 million, and Sindh Madressatul Islam University Rs684 million.
