HEC Revamps Home Economics Curriculum to Boost Academic and Industry Relevance

The Home Economics degree programs' curricula have been updated by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) through its National Curriculum Review Committee (NCRC), guaranteeing that they meet the demands of both academia and business today.
According to a news release on Thursday, the two-day NCRC conference was conducted at the University of Sargodha on January 21–22, 2025, and was led by Dr. Imrana Seemi from the University of Peshawar.
The committee reaffirmed HEC's dedication to promoting high-quality education and reviving the field to address contemporary challenges by creating extensive curricula for the Associate Degree, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science in Home Economics.
Prominent scholars from all around the country were invited to the meeting, which was opened by Dr. Amjad Hussain, Director General of HEC's Academics Division.
He emphasized HEC's continuous initiatives to enhance academic standards, streamline curriculum creation, and build an education system that is more organized and responsive to industry.
The HEC's curriculum preparation process was thoroughly explained by Mr. Muhammad Ali Baig, Deputy Director at HEC and NCRC Secretary.
He emphasized how crucial it is for home economics classes to have standardized academic frameworks in order to give students the necessary knowledge and abilities.
He called attention to the drop in enrollments in home economics programs and underlined the necessity of innovation to draw students. He also urged institutions to fulfill their responsibility in strengthening relationships between academia and business to improve employment opportunities for graduates.
In order to improve technological expertise and update the curriculum, he also underlined the significance of adding courses on software applications and artificial intelligence.
Commercialization in Home Economics, Software Applications and Artificial Intelligence in Home Economics, Personal and Family Finance, and Sustainability in Home Economics are some of the new multidisciplinary courses that the committee incorporated to modernize home economics education. Together with six specialist streams, especially in emerging technologies, these enhancements are meant to give students a well-rounded academic and real-world foundation.
The updated curriculum takes into account the most recent developments in the field and was created in compliance with HEC's undergraduate and graduate education policies. The finished curricula will be distributed to universities around the country for implementation after being authorized by HEC management.
