After the independence of Pakistan, when Karachi was declared the capital of Pakistan, the University of Sindh was the only institute in the city at that time. On this occasion, it was felt that the University of Sindh should be shifted to Hyderabad and a federal university should be established in Karachi. Thus, on June 23, 1951, the University of Karachi was formally established, which at that time was located in three different buildings in the vicinity of Princes Street adjacent to Bandar Road. The first Vice Chancellor of Karachi University was Prof. ABA Haleem Sahib.

The then-government offered two potential plots of land, one on Country Club Road and the other close to the beach (south of the current Habib Public School), for the formal construction of the University of Karachi a few years after its establishment. A site on Country Club Road was chosen for Karachi University. In this way, the establishment of the present campus, covering 1279 acres of land, was implemented in 1959. The location of the University of Karachi was 12 miles away from the center of the city, i.e., Gurmandira (which was the zero point of Karachi at that time). After the transfer of the Jamia to this new location, a poem became very popular in the late 1960s, the stanza of which was "Twelve miles from the city, Ik Al-Baili Basti." Columns about Jamia were also written in newspapers under the title "Twelve miles beyond the city."

He was a great architect who built universities and other projects in many countries around the world. In 1985, after the death of Michael Ekoshakh, his architectural work was declared an international heritage.

The second Shaykh-ul-Jamia of the University of Karachi, Mr. Prof. Bashir Ahmad Hashmi, was very active in the construction of the University of Karachi. He began construction work under his supervision. Finally, on January 18, 1960, Jamia Karachi shifted to Country Club Road (University Road). Sheikh Al Jamia, teachers, employees, male and female students, elders, and guardians of the city came in a convoy from Country Club Road to the main administrative building of Jamia Karachi and in this short journey, 30 guardians completed the recitation of the Holy Quran. The new location of Karachi University was called Jamia Nagar.
