The Undergraduate Education Policy (UGE), a game-changer in public universities with an eye to emphasizing the importance of liberal arts education, is going to be implemented by The Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan from fall 2024.

In the vein of Albert Einstein's contention that true learning happens in absence from a classroom when students are taught to think critically, UGE aims at graduating professionals who are high-performing (ethically minded) creators, communicators, and problem solvers.

The UGE aims to prepare students for the intricacies of contemporary society by encouraging critical thinking and intellectual curiosity through the implementation of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary curriculum.

Some other key components of the UGE are core courses in "general education" and interdisciplinary/distribution subjects, as well as a required internship/field experience and capstone project.

After studying two years, students can also gain an "Associate Degree" in Finnish, which offers more possibilities for continuing studies. Still, there are many hurdles to implementing this bold policy.

There is an extremely low ratio of educators, especially in rural and poor communities, which raises questions over the quality of education. The necessary variety of instructors often also poses a problem; many schools have trouble finding enough qualified individuals to teach in all content areas or instruction types.

With a two-year associate degree and the ability to switch subjects or pursue double majors, the UGE also gives students more freedom. Students are better prepared to handle problems in the real world thanks to this emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and practical skills.

It is imperative that all public and private universities in Pakistan adopt this vision as the country's higher education system changes. In order to overcome obstacles, raise educational standards, and guarantee that the UGE's goals are completely achieved, transformative leadership will be crucial.
