On Monday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) heard many petitions requesting practical steps to reduce the area's smog.
Judge Shahid Karim, who presided over the case, emphasized the need to establish a school bus policy and ordered all schools to re-register within a month. He directed School Education Secretary Khalid Nazir to revoke schools' registrations for noncompliance with the bus regulation.
Nazir highlighted the need for schools to offer bus services in order to obtain new registrants when he presented proposed regulations for private schools. Under the updated regulations, buses will be required, he said, adding, "We have made a policy where only schools having buses will be registered."
Noting that school owners have sufficient resources to carry out the policy, Justice Karim emphasized the gravity of the situation. Before the next smog season, he gave the government instructions to finalize the regulations and guarantee compliance.
Along with highlighting infractions on Multan Road, such as poor adherence to traffic regulations, the court also requested a comprehensive traffic plan from the director general of the Lahore Development Authority. The court noted that there are bus depots and societies on Multan Road where traffic laws are not being observed.
Justice Karim stressed the importance of the issue while expressing pleasure with the government's efforts to tackle smog. "There is no more time to be wasted on the environmental issue, which has become extremely serious," he said.
The judge also questioned Aitchison College's jurisdiction during the hearings. Justice Karim directed the Punjab government's attorney to notify the school of the policy changes after the school secretary informed the court that Aitchison College was under the purview of the Higher Education Department.
Haroon Farooq and others filed the petitions, which show the public's rising awareness about environmental deterioration and its effects on health. In order to guarantee noticeable progress, Justice Karim emphasized the significance of carrying out all court orders prior to the upcoming smog season.
Advocate Hassan Ijaz, the legal representative for the Punjab government, promised the court that the environmental crisis would be addressed in the future.
