In the frigid, mountainous areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), where 341 people have been killed so far due to cloudbursts, severe rainfall, and flash floods, all public and private schools have been shuttered for a week, officials announced Monday.

The KP education minister, Faisal Khan Tarakai, officially confirmed the school closure and posted the official notification on X.

Since educational facilities in the chilly mountainous regions will be closed from August 19 to 25, all educational activities will be conducted at home or online, he added.

In these high-altitude areas, summer vacations often run just one month, from July 1 to July 31, according to authorities.

Until August 31, schools in the province's low-lying and plains regions are now on summer vacation.

The shutdown is a part of precautions to protect kids in the face of extreme weather and possible flash floods in the area.

Importantly, a strong cloudburst that caused flash floods and lightning devastated isolated mountain communities in Swabi district on Monday, killing at least 25 people and wounding 35 more, according to officials.

The worst-hit areas in the Gadoon Amazai region are Dalori Bala and Sarkoi Payan, where the floodwaters' current caused several homes to collapse. Many victims came under the debris.

Twenty persons, including women, children, and the elderly, have perished in Dalori Bala alone, according to Swabi Deputy Commissioner Nasrullah Khan. At the time of the most recent report, ten bodies and six injured were discovered.

However, recent rains, floods, and landslides have killed at least 670 people and injured 1,000 more across the country, according to Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority.

He told reporters, accompanied by Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, that two to three more monsoon spells are anticipated, with the present one probably lasting till Friday. By the end of September, the situation should return to normal, he continued.
