Pakistan Could Get a Social Media Age Limit Soon

In an attempt to set a minimum age requirement for social media users in Pakistan, a new bill was introduced in the Senate on Monday. Users must be at least 16 years old to register for an account on any social media platform, per the proposed law.

The purpose of the bill is to make social media companies answerable for keeping minors off their sites. Platforms that permit users under the age of sixteen to register for accounts risk fines of between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 5 million.

The bill also imposes severe penalties on anyone who helps minors create social media accounts. Criminals may be sentenced to up to six months in jail and fined between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 5 million.

In order to maintain enforcement, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will have the authority to block accounts that belong to minors and put policies in place that will stop them from opening new accounts in the future.

The bill is a part of an overall initiative by lawmakers to control online environments, safeguard children from harm, and hold tech companies doing business in Pakistan more accountable. After that, it will proceed to the legislative process, where it might be discussed and changed before a final vote.
