Food science is an evolving field that has recently emerged. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as "the scientific study of food, for example, what it is made of, the effects it has on our bodies, and how to prepare and store it safely." Every day, food inspectors conduct raids at various locations and seal restaurants that do not adhere to food safety and hygiene regulations.
The raid team at these restaurants consists of local law enforcement agencies as well as food inspectors, who test the food served against prescribed hygiene standards and decide its quality as per standard protocols given to the hotels. In addition, food scientists and technologists use a variety of methods to test food ingredients. Moreover, they use their knowledge to develop new food products or find new ways of adding value to the production, packaging and selection of existing food products. In addition to food production, a food scientist's career may also include legal responsibilities such as discovering new sources of foods, evaluating harmful ingredients or contamination in foods, etc.
Food Science Technician
A food science technician, also called a food analyst, is subordinate to food scientists and technologists in research. It conducts standard tests for quality assurance, quality control and ingredient analysis of food products. The food science technician collects and maintains data obtained from laboratory tests. It classifies the products or samples by analyzing the results or comparing the results with a standard table. He also ensures that the food products and packaging meet the mandatory requirements. Food technicians may also need to prepare a report based on their findings. Technicians also clean and maintain laboratory equipment in good condition.
Consumer Safety Officer
The Consumer Safety Officer visits the production plants to assess whether their food safety system is working properly or not. He also ensures that the system works regularly. In connection with the implementation of any type of measure, the Consumer Safety Officer may collect evidence by going through the investigative process.
Food Inspector
Food inspectors ensure the freshness and safety of food prepared for public consumption. They inspect slaughterhouses and processing plants to ensure that all types of meat, chicken, eggs and their products are produced in accordance with federal agricultural laws and regulations. A food inspector can be promoted to the post of consumer safety inspector. These inspectors may be employed in privately run meat, chicken and egg processing plants, where they ensure their processes are running according to guidelines. They may also act as importers and exporters and may be deployed at airports and seaports, where they may be responsible for monitoring food products being exported and imported.
Food Policy Analyst
A policy analyst is also involved in the formulation and implementation of government policies. He may work with groups of institutions or agencies. The Food Policy Analyst focuses on food safety and production, nutritional assistance programs and related international issues. Analysts also usually conduct research on the effects of policy. The analyst obtains data to solve any issue and then prepares a report by converting it into a formula.
Food Science Education in Pakistan
The importance of food scientists in Pakistan is not lessened by food authorities, public and private sector food testing laboratories, provincial and federal agriculture departments, research institutes, multinational and local food industries, certificate organizations, colleges and universities.
However, they are required and have employment opportunities in research sectors, the hotel industry, the dairy development sector, small business development agencies, food ingredients and consulting firms. Whether in Pakistan or abroad, a food scientist fulfills the duty of saving millions of people from disease and death by making the production and supply of healthy foods safe.
To become a food scientist, one must graduate from any recognized college or university, after which students pursue a Master's degree in the relevant field to prevent food contamination and develop new ideas for food products. There are also opportunities for those studying in this field to pursue a doctorate degree, which can fulfill their dream of landing a dream job in the country and abroad. At present, the number of food science graduates in our country is low. Universities and other educational institutions in Pakistan need to take steps in this regard in line with modern requirements.
